It's nothing to do with being scared of needles (even though i have a severe phobia) its just im scared because its such a new drug.

I am 14 next week and my mum has already said that i will be given it no matter what my opinion is.

How does everyone know what the side affects are or may be in years time?

What if it causes serious damage?

I really wish i could have later on, maybe when im 16 or 17 so that its had time to be tested and reviewed properly...

Any thoughts on this?

No stupid remarks, this is purely because im worried/curious about side affects in years time, if you understand me

  1. Ive already had it and im assuming your in Australia coz you say mum not mom lol, anyway you are probably aware of the media hype when the injection was first released and all the girls were fainting and getting seriously ill, dont worry it was all fake and its not nearly as bad as they made it out to be. Scientists are just that, they are scientists and they know their s**t. They wouldnt allow something to be administered to every teenage girl in australia if they didnt think it was safe. Dont worry, i'd much rather put up with three jabs than cancer and chemo in the long run.

  2. you should be worried.

    I know I would be.

  3. Your mother is incorrect, you dont have to be given this needle unless you consent to it. It's totally up to you and dont let anyone tell you otherwise.

I have had it, and I think (if it works and ends up being totally safe) its a fantastic drug.

That said, i think it's very mature of you to be considering the long term effects of the drug and the fact that there could be negative side effects.

If you're not having s*x, and you really are worried about it, wait and see. Im pretty sure its free for women up until their early 20's, so you'll still be able to get it later.

Even if all your friends are getting it now at school, in a few years you can go to an outside clinic.

Consider all the options, but at the end of the day it's your body and no one can tell you what you should or shouldnt put in it.

  4. My daughter had this a couple of months ago.  Cancer is a horrible disease, and no one is sure what causes it.  This is just one step in it's eradication. Ask all of these questions of the nurse or doctor when you go.  I agree with your mom, though.  These are tested for years before they're released for use by the way.

  5. Have the shot, silly.

It is not going to hurt any more or any less if you have it now or later; not having it would just be dumb, since the statistical evidence proves it is the best way to reduce your risk of this cancer, which KILLS almost 4,000 ladies every year in the US.

Since it addresses a virus, there aren't going to be any "unknown side-effects" in years time.  The virus is gone.

  6. New isnt always a good thing. Cancer sadly isnt a new thing either, just a nasty one that hopefully is close to it's undoing! If it is not yet life threatening, dont do it, wait and see how things pan out first with the new drug as well as new ways to treat and hopefully kill cancer.

Parents need to realize that their kids are individuals capable of thinking and deciding for themselves. Yes they make mistakes and need to do so, but in terms of something like this, it is up to the individual to make their own decisions. You sound coherent and smart, it is your body, your choice.

Parents who dont realize this only serve to drive wedges in between things/places there should be none. Not saying you are going to run away, but what if you did? Would they be happy then seeing as they drove you to such a rash decision through wanting to tell you what to do? It is sad to hear of such a thing with what is supposed to be something of a strong bond, family that is. Sometimes sadly that isnt the case, and you turn to friends or even strangers for answers. The only answer that should count here is yours.

I dont know what to tell you exactly, and no i am not saying to run away from home, that might help, but could cause more problems than it is worth. One never really knows. But legally check into it, it is your body! Divorcing parents is something that has been done, there might be some legality that says in cases like this that it is your decision alone. Do not be afraid to ask/tell doctors how you feel, they should listen and be able to help you as well...

Good luck and here is hoping to a long overdue end to cancer. Support stem cell research as well, if it doesnt cure cancer it will cure so many other things and help millions.

  7. well it will most probably be a dead virus like most flu jabs which will build up your own natural defences, though this doesnt work for diseases like aids as even a dead virus has severe complications however i am sure the cervical cancer jab has been thoroughly tested otherwise they wouldnt administer it if it wasnt safe

  8. You are still young and I believe you should have time to wait. I'm like you I don't see why you should be able to wait, just don't have any type of unprotected s*x with anyone.

  9. omg im 14 next Friday

my mum and dad say i have to get the jab too and im worried!

    is the needle big!?

ha ha did u watch it on BBC news earlier?

i dont think we need to worry they wouldnt do it if it was dangerous

  10. The benefits outweigh the risks!  My husband's grandmother died of cervical cancer.  My sister and her high school friend has HPV, and I have heard that 80% of women have it now.  Cervical was such a painful death for my husbands grandmother.  Please do some research.  Protect yourself (your worth it)!

  11. Definition

Cervical cancer is a disease in which the cells of the cervix become abnormal and start to grow uncontrollably, forming tumors.

    Description

In the United States, cervical cancer is the fifth most common cancer among women aged 35–54, and the third most common cancer of the female reproductive tract.
