Can you name your top five slugfest? I mean a fight where all tactics were pushed to the side and both fighters went toe to toe for all rounds or when one was KO'd before the fight went the distance.

My top 5 fights are:

1. George Foreman vs Ron Lyle

2. Tommy Hearns vs Marvin Hagler

3. Diego Corrales vs Jose Luis Castillo I

4. Hassem Hamed vs Kevin Kelley

5. Sugar Ray Leonard vs Roberto Duran I

What is your top 5?

  1. 1.Hagler-Hearns no doubt the best 9 minutes of boxing ever!

2.George Foreman vs Ron Lyle heavyweight drama

    3.Hamed vs Kelley

4.Corrales vs castillo with a classic ending for a true champion

5.Erik Morales vs Marco antonio barrera III all three were great and classics i personally like the third b/c it was more recent and the final chapter.

  2. I got Hagler/Hearns at number one, it was incredible.  Others of note were Hagler/Mugambi, Duran/DeJesus I, Holyfield/Bowe, Holyfield/Tyson, McClellan/Jackson I & II and any of the Ali/Frazier fights.

It's tough to rate them from one to five, Carbajal/Gonzales I was just as spectacular as Corrales/Castillo I and rate them a tie for the 2 & 3 spots.

I put Michael Moorer vs Burt Cooper at 4 and round out my top five with Julio Cesar Chavez's KO of Meldrick Taylor coming in at the five spot.

  3. 1. Isreal Vazquez v. Rafeal Marquez (all three matches)

    2. Nassem Hamed v. Kevin Kelley

    3. Riddick Bowe v. Evander Holyfield (second match)

    4. Micky Ward v. Gatti (the first two fights...)

    5. Erik Morales v. Marco Barrera (all 3 matches)

    6. Rocky Balboa v. Ivan Drago (my alltime favorite)

just off the top of my head and disappointed there wasnt more mexican fighters on the list....But these are the fights i most remember that had nonstop action with countless haymakers being thrown

  4. hearns vs hagler zale vs graziano 2  sugar ray robinson vs carmen bassilio 2 marciano vs walcott ! foreman vs lyle

  5. I'm going off the fights I seen live on ppv T.V or cable. I can't go back as far as you because I'm 25 and have been watching fights since the mid 90's to now. So my top 5 are as follows.

    1.Corrales vs Castillo I

    2. Vasquez vs Marquez I, II, III

    3. Morales vs. Barrera I & II

    4. Gatti vs Ward

    5. Morales vs Pacman I

  6. Great question sir.

    1.  Foreman vs Lyle.  If there has ever been a real slugfest, it was this fight.  These guys took turns throwing bombs and hitting the canvas during this amazing fight.

    2.  Graziano vs Zale #2.  Their trilogy of fights were all wars but this one was special as Rocky who was getting badly beaten, came roaring back to win this slugfest.

    3.  Hagler vs Hearns.  That first round was the the most dramatic first round in boxing history to me.  Hagler survivied Hearns best and with cut forehead and all, won this slugfest.

    4.  Moore vs Durelle 1st fight.  Archie was all but knocked out by Durelle in the 1st round, kept coming back and back again finally winning this slugfest in the 11th round.

    5.  Gatti vs Ward.  If two guys were ever meant to fight each other, it was these two.  The fight drama and the sheer amount of punches thrown and landed was something to see.

Wow 6 thumbs down?  Makes me wonder if someone has an axe to grind.  Anyone else notice that although Blogbaba and I gave good answers, that this is happening?  Trolls again.

  7. My actual favorite was Hagler/Mugabi. Hagler was a man's man. He could box for sure, but if you wanted to go at it, he would be more than happy to accommodate you. Mugabi was a bigger version of Azuma Nelson. I am going by memory here, but I think he was 31-0 with 30 KO's at 154.

Ding! Round 1. Mugabi and Hagler hook up at center ring and duke it out.

Rounds 2-10. same thing every round- no pretense, just flat out fighting. Finally, Hagler barely beats the smaller Mugabi down. BARELY!!!!

Neither of them were ever the same again.

None of the top champions seem to fight like that anymore :(
