Your views on encouraging eating disorders?

There are some very disturbing webistes that seem to promote eating disorders. They post pictures of extremely thin women who are often so emaciated they have protruding bones. They call it 'thinspiration'.

This is a dierct word for word quote from a website promoting eating dosorders:

''Switch to low fat everything, then progress to nonfat. Nonfat food tends to taste like c**p (in my opinion) and you may end up eating less because of that''.

I can't even begin to pick apart that quote. It's dangerously misleading. Fat is good, it's not the enemy. Yet so may people are depriving themselves and for what? How can anyone promote eating disorders

as something to be admired?

What do you think?

  1. Heya

I totally agree , these websites need to be investigated and shut down . AS a past sufferer of anorexia i know first hand its not a nice disease and these websites could do some serious damage to the young generation.I think that healthy eating is good for people and having a average size body and a good bmi is neccesary for health and happiness however starving yourself thin doesnt do the trick. It needs sorting.

    =] x*x

  2. Unfortunately, there are alot of people that are overweight and willing to try any fad dieting to lose weight. Alot of people don't realize there is good fat and bad fat, and don't realize that everyone needs fat in their diet. And, unfortunately, there are alot of idiots out there that prey on those that are desperately trying to lose weight, they are in it for the money and will milk it for all they can.

  3. what you have to remember is the people who make these sites (often young teenagers) are probably quite deep in an eating disorder, so they probably can't tell they're doing harm, or that it could kill other people let alone themselves.

They see it as a safe place to express their fears worries and their disorder, i doubt they are looking to give people the disorder as they often say don't start or no 'wannarexics', but want to find people across the globe who understands.

The reason they are not all 'got rid of' is the internet is meant to be free speech and expression, not now control that too.

But i agree it is very dangerous, and triggering to a lot of young girls. I believe parents should keep a closer eye on what their kids look at on here, or get parental control and monitor the sites they look at.

I believe that the older generation should have more sense then to listen to it. I mean if there was a site for schizophrenics you wouldn't start listening and believing there are aliens sending messages through the toaster, the same as you shouldn't believe starving yourself will turn you into a model.

But generally if a site turns someone anorexic, there are underlying issues there in the first place, a time bomb waiting to go off.

the best thing you can do, is just to warn people not to go there and that it is a load of BS.

  4. People are way too concerned with physical appearance today and it puts unbelievable pressure on those who are struggling with confidence issues and body issues. I agree with you that it is not only dangerous but cruel to reinforce any kind of disorder. Some people are fragile and need compassion. They do not need to be encouraged to obsess about their bodies and starve themselves. More emphasis should be placed on the non-physical aspects of life like developing confidence, character, strength, compassion, kindness, intellect, etc.

  5. the issue is us Americans are slobs. we eat everything that is over the average portion of our foods, people actually think everything needs to be consume thats in front of them.

I use to be 200 pounds last year of April- by eating like a normal human being and do my excersising i drop to 159 by Sept. i used certain ANA web pages for guidelines and it works. the problem is people dont know how to use moderation.

  6. Wow, encouraging eating disorders? That's just insane. It reminds me of druggies that screwed up their life wanting others to do just the same. These people who s***w up their diets and health want others to suffer the consequences too. People make decisions good and bad and they are the only ones that can do it. Guidance goes a long way as well from parents, friends and experts on the topic. Depending on the effect of the guidance is whether or not that person will make a good or bad choice.

  7. quite allot of the low fat foods have the correct amount of fat for our diet so promotion of lower fat foods could be better, but It is always a bad Idea to promote things which are dangerous to peoples health.

these people should be taken to court and stopped fast.

  8. It's really sad these types of websites exist. There are also websites that tend to encourage self-harm, and even suicide. It is very hard to censor the internet these days.

Honestly, I feel like people who are so hopeless go to the websites to feel some sort of connection to others who are experiencing the same thing. It's a horrible way to connect to people, but when you don't have anyone- this may be the only way they don't feel so isolated in their illness.

I say this sort of from experience. In my my high school days I used to visit self-harming websites where people posted pictures all day. It sounds crazy and it obviously didn't help me cope in positive ways- but seeing others who were suffering made me feel like I wasn't the only one. I could reach out through those photographs and sort of cling to people.

People will gravitate towards anything to help them feel a sense of belonging.
