I know this has been asked numerously, but I need some perspectives that are relative to today. I'll start by giving a few examples: Emo, Chav, Goth, Plastic, Jock, Prep, s**t

Ok, If you can tell me if you use these stereotypes and why/why not [e.g media influence] I would really appreciate it [it's for a school project]

Thanks! [=

  1. never heard of (ch av) the are just every day occurrences in our speech

  2. I'm guessing your in highschool... well me too. the thing with stereotyping is that its done all over the world.. unavoidable as people everywhere have their own differrent oppinion on the world.

    the real question you should be asking is the different way the stereotypical words are used in different countries.

    Such as a s**t. in my country the word is used so much that it has become part of our vocabulary so its doesnt mean anything. and i do believe a Jock is a "bad" thing in America!!!??? Here being a jock means your top of the food chain....

    so if you must ask the question on stereotyping, dont use the media...it to predictable but show how the stereotypes are differentiated in different countries.

  3. i used to sterotypes.. i mean that's jus how i was raised you know. but as i grew older, i feel that is a very big thing today. people judge others on their differences. i stopped bcuz i feel that i wouldn't want people to judge me, and by that i have to make a change to myself. i'm now a better person bcuz i don't judge anyone by their differences. i look around and there are many people that are still very sterotyping but i feel good inside cuz i know i'm one step ahead of them. hope it helped :)

  4. A stereotype is a simplified and/or standardized conception or image with specific meaning, often held in common by one group of people about another group. A stereotype can be a conventional and oversimplified conception, opinion, or image, based on the assumption that there are attributes that members of the other group hold in common. Stereotypes may be positive or negative in tone. They are typically generalizations based on minimal or limited knowledge about a group to which the person doing the stereotyping does not belong. Persons may be grouped based on racial group, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or any number of other categories

    Factors Affecting Stereotypes

        * Historical factors

        * Generalization

        * First impressions

        * Simplification

        * Exaggeration

        * Presentation of cultural attributes as being 'natural'

        * Racism, sexism, homophobia and other forms of discrimination

        * Association of persons with other groups

        * An appearance or behavior (or other feature) that stands out as different from that which the observing group is used to.

    Stereotypes are not only part of the culture and identity of those groups who are stereotyped, but they are also part of the culture of those who recognize and utilize them for interpreting certain groups. Stereotypes not only define and place others as inferior, but also implicitly affirm and legitimate those who stereotype in their own position and identity.” Also, different cultures don't necessarily recognize the same stereotypes.
