Your way forward in Chess
If you are a beginner at chess, then you must have found yourself in an awkward position where someone has just asked you a question about a recent chess match using so much jargon, that instead of English it sounded like Chinese. Well if you want to save
yourself the embarrassment of mumbling an unintelligible answer, then you have come to the right place. We have taken it up on ourselves to explain the more important chess terminologies in such a way that it is easy for you to understand. In this article,
we will be dealing with the terms that begin with a W.
Chess is a game of strategy, focusing on long term goals is more important for success. But a player should have the virtue of patience if he or she is to achieve long term objectives. A move that requires this quality is known as the Waiting move. A player
makes this move when she is waiting for an initiative from the opponent. Therefore, the nature of the move is passive and harmless. Another W term is known as a Weak square. As the name suggests, it is a vulnerable square that is subject to attack by the opponent.
A square usually becomes weak because a player’s pawns are unable to defend it. In case the loss of a bishop takes place, then all squares of the color of the captured bishop become weak. This phenomenon is termed the Weak square complex.
A more interesting W terminology is a Wild move. This move is called such because it puts the mind of the opponent in a wild state. A wild move is characteristically complicated, which makes its objective difficult to comprehend. This sort of move can enable
a player to reach a Winning position. This brings us to another W term that needs some explaining. A Winning position is the one which can lead a player to make a checkmate, if handled properly. If the player does not make any blunder and performs correct
play, she can force a checkmate sooner or later against any sort of enemy defense.
An important part of the chessboard is the Wing. The wing, or the flank, are the sides to the left and right of the initial positions of the king and the queen. The wing on the king’s right is called the kingside whereas that on the queen’s left is known
as the queenside. A variation of this term is known as the Wing gambit. This is the name given to the openings that categorize making a gambit with one of the wing pawns. Generally, the gambit is made by using the pawn present on the b file.
There are some strong chess players while others are relatively weak. There are some chess players that cannot seem to get the hang of it. The last group of chess players are titled Woodpushers. Woodpushers are chess players who repeatedly perform less than
the standard average performance level.
That was the last of the W terms we had in store for you. We will end this article with an enlightening quote by Benjamin Franklin: “ The Game of Chess is not merely an idle amusement several very valuable qualities of the mind, useful in the course of human
life, are to be acquired and strengthened by it, so as to become habits ready on all occasions for life is a kind of Chess, in which we have points to gain, and competition or adversaries to contend with, and in which there is a vast variety of good and ill
events, that are, in some degree, the effect of prudence, or want of it.”
