I work at a well known tech co. but everyone is a bit casual at work...some wear jeans regularly. ive always worn pants, maybe 1 inch healed shoes, with regular work blouses or sweaters b/c i have this idea in my head that the prettier a woman is, the more u expect her to be dumb...am i right here? or should i use "what i got" to my advantage? Friends have said looks is a shortcut and I should use it if i have it. I could easily start wearing makeup/perfume/ high heels/skirts/silk blouses.. if that means less years struggling to climb up the ladder. of course it will not make me work any less hard/perform any less. I work 11 hr days and just got a large raise after 6 months.

What is your honest opinion on all this?

Thanks much :)

  1. With A background work history of 12+ years in the corp. world and 20+ years as A business owner my opinion would be that  dressing for success is very important , but you need to understand what that means-you are on the wrong track.

Your apparel  IS your image , make sure it is saying what you wish to convey, IE " I am A hard working ,motivated, skill full, intelligent employee who is A valuable asset to your company"

Dressing s**y just says that "I will sleep with anyone needed to get ahead."

If it is respect you desire - you must respect your self first

  2. No.  I'd be much more likely to get rid of you.  That kind of c**p in a corporate environment just leads to trouble.

  3. I personally won't but it really depends who you are working for and if the office has blinds.

  4. It depends on your boss. in today's world a lot of people are hiring good looking people because it brings in more customers. It might be possible for you to get a raise or what not if you dress to impress (not so much s**y but more, high class - you know what I mean?). As long as you do your work and give you all you got you should get noticed. If not you give a 110% effort and make sure to talk about stuff that you did, but make sure you don't make it all about you. i.e -

"The project I did was very changeling, I gave it my best and I know that it's good. But I couldn't do it without _______ they helped me out and without them I don't know if I could have got it done."

    - It shows your a team player too :).

If that doesn't help, well make you should try a different part of your job. Like if you work behind a desk shuffling papers but you know you'll do great in sales, let your boss know.

  5. I am not building my work estimation on s**y dressing but it can get opposite result with me, because work is work, not a fashion show.

But there are a lot of people may like that

  6. I agree with maxmom56. First of all if you showed up for the initial interview dressed to impress sexually you would not be hired. If you were previously hired and later shifted to an overly s**y appearance I would get rid of you because it causes distractions, negative comments, and a inharmonious work environment. Your skills and abilities are located between your ears - not in other areas of your anatomy. A woman that dresses professionally and comes across as capable and skilled is much more likely to succeed. Maintain your dignity. You move up the corporate latter by what you bring to the table - and it's not a lot of makeup, short skirts, and visible cleavage. Enough said ? Dress to the point where you have a respectable advantage.
