Youri Mulder rates Bayern as favourites to win the Bundesliga; tips Dortmund for a top-four finish
Former Schalke striker Youri Mulder has rated Bayern Munich as the favourites to win the Bundesliga title this season. He claimed that Jupp Heynckes’ side has been sensational since the start of the campaign and that it will be
very difficult to stop them. He insisted Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund have had dismal starts to the season and Schalke can give the Bavarians some tough competition.
Die Bayern lead the Bundesliga standings table with 19 points from the eight games played and have only lost once all season. The Munich giants have only conceded one goal in the current campaign which was on the opening day in
August, against Borussia Monchengladbach.
Mulder insisted that Bayern Munich are currently the favourites to lift the league title at the end of the season. He admitted that other teams that were being touted as the contenders like Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund
have not had the best starts to the campaign and it could be a one horse race.
The former Dutch international added that Schalke can surely pull of a surprise as they have some great players in their ranks.
“It's going to be very difficult to knock Bayern off of top spot. Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen are already a bit off the pace. Maybe Schalke can pull off a surprise,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.
Mulder claimed that Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund will make a comeback and are just going through a rough patch. He added that it is always difficult for a team to match the same brilliant performance from last season.
“Dortmund will certainly improve further and land up in the top four. But it's always difficult to follow-up on the kind of fantastic season they've just had with the same quality of performance. They now have the additional pressure
of playing in the Champions League, on top of which they're a very young side,” he concluded.
Youri Mulder made 176 league appearances for Schalke 04 and scored 33 goals.
