Question:

Youth For Understanding: Japan

I have questions about the YFU exchange program in Japan. I'm looking into the summer program.

Do the host families fully understand English?

Do you have to know some Japanese?

I would prefer an answer from a person who experienced the YFU or is currently in it. I'm sorry for being picky. And if possible I would like to question you further by emailing you. Thank You.

  1. No, host families do not have to fully understand english, in fact most of them don't. It's part of the whole experience. But sometimes a child in the family might know a little english. You do not have to know Japanese first. You might want to look into some other programs like AFS and Rotary.... especially Rotary.

If you have any other questions feel free to email me.

  2. Host families will unlikely be fluent in English, in fact it may be very limited. YFU does not require students to have Japanese, for most programs. Some scholarship programs do have a language requirement. For additional information I recommend you call out Admissions Staff at 1.800.TEENAGE. You can also log into the chat room between 9am - 5pm EST (find the chat room on the Website www.yfu-usa.org)
