Youth prisons is it a good idea??

Reading through posts i thought about this and wondered peoples views should youth prisons come to exist. As a teenager myself i think we get off far to lightly as the other day someone was attacked walking down the street for a petty school argument. There going to the police but apart from a couple of scratches there is minor evience. Anyway I think youth prisons are the way to go 8-16 year olds should be kept in like a normal prisoner would but with education but not a 15 billion govermant spending spree for 'high' education at these places. For anti social beheviour surely a mounth in a youth prison would be enough to discourage someone. (well it would me).

Also just one last comment:

Parents are to blame for childrens beheviour 9 times out of 10 however the teenager themsleves commits the offence so they need to be fined/jailed/shot ;) not the parents

I suppose it depends on what you mean by "get off far too lightly."

Sometimes juveniles get off somewhat easily, for example: I arrested a minor for stealing a $200 pair of designer sunglasses and he was "reprimanded" and told not to involve himself in further criminal activity. Clearly this kid knew what he was doing by taking one of the most expensive pairs...and he never fessed up to it despite the fact he had the price tag on his person. To give him a verbal warning seems a bit light in my book.

On the other hand, through my three years of studying criminal justice (especially the corrections aspect of things), I know you can't go throwing petty criminals in with the real bad guys. The effects of prisonization can happen to anyone who's been incarcerated, regardless of their offense or mental/emotional condition prior to being locked up. Incarceration isn't really serving its purpose if people are coming out worse than they went in, ya know?

Fortunately for you, you are discouraged by the ramifications of illegal activity. Most offenders don't exactly consider the consequences of their actions before committing the offense so it's hard to scare anyone into behaving with threats of nasty prison conditions.

Also, you have to consider; adult offenders are incarcerated because this is what they have developed into...a criminal. Juvenile offenders are still developing and if they spend a significant portion of their crucial years behind bars, it will seriously affect their ability to function in the real world.

Bottom line: very tough call.

I think the ones that are repeat offenders should definitely get some boot camp.  Let the go for a few weekends a month.  If they are still punks, Military school.  That would be great for a lot of gang members--except not together.  Some kids get freaked out after getting busted, you can tell they learned their lesson.  They need more outlets to vent, burn off some energy, and be creative.  Unfortunately, every time the budget gets cut, the programs go with it.

What you are really saying perhaps is should we bring back the system of Borstal schools.  Read all about them on http://www.borstal.skinheads.co.uk  Whilst I agree that some of the little thugs and yobs should be punished, the politically correct people who know all about health and safety and human rights will point out the disadvantages of imprisoning children (even for a month) in a penal institution.  If they are old enough put them in the armed forces and teach them some discipline.

I like your common sense way of thinking.  Sounds like a good idea in principle but would be met with lots of hurdles such as human rights etc.

Good to see however that someone who is a teenager themselves has their head screwed on about who may be to blame for bad behaviour.  A refreshing change to the usual 'oh he had a bad upbringing', 'he's from a broken home' kind of comments that are too often used as an excuse for bad behaviour.

Are you stupid or just stoned? Youth prisons allow outside intimidation from idiots whom have a zero feeling for well being of others, remember the black child who got beaten "too death" in a so called youth camp? Clearly they beat him for color and social issues, Nobody has the right to touch my children , not even myself. Honestly when I see someone correcting their child in public in a unruly manner, nine times outta ten they end up laid out on the ground wondering what hit them ! Wards of the State? OH that is a great idea huh? last time I checked 55% of the State wards committed insane acts of violence after going throe such ordeals, IE Robert Hawkins etc etc etc.
