Youtube vs. Sewing book?

Question

I intend to major in fashion design after my senior year in high school. I will be going into my senior year this coming school year. I’ve just started to learn to sew but I need your advice. I want to be good enough to make outfits by the end of october and create any possible project in the end.

I’ve purchased a book called “The Complete Book of Sewing” And “Stichin’ *****’N” (for knitting). It looks great but it was quite pricey. I’ve also found youtube videos.

So here’s the question.

Do I keep the book and use youtube as an aid?

Or do I stick to youtube?

Or just to the book?

Any advice would be great

A good book will be guiding you forever. I use mine even

after years of sewing.

Use any and all the options available to you. As you go on, you will discover tricks on your own. However, continued

courses (even after a degree) will be very helpful. Materials

and methods change constantly.

Use both.  Having the book right there is handy.  I use books, bought and checked out from library, and the internet as a resource.  Reason is, if I get stuck on a problem, I can google it and see how others did it.  Also, for inspriration, if I want to make my own pattern instead of buying them.  I don't like store bought patterns.

Seeing it on video is handy too. You can see the step-by-step instruction.

I like having my sewing books right by my machine for reference. The public library has a lot of books with patterns and how to info in sewing, knitting and crafts of all kinds. It would be worth a look and if you find something you just have to have, you can order it by number at a book store.

Youtube is good for somethings but you should consider taking a college course if you aspire to being a pro.  You will learn so much more than you know now and learn different tecniques of sewing and designing. Good luck with whatever you decide !
