Yovani Gallardo shines as Milwaukee Brewers defeat Atlanta Braves 1-0 – MLB Update
Yovani Gallardo did not give up any runs in nine innings to help the Milwaukee Brewers defeat Atlanta Braves 1-0 at Miller Park, Milwaukee on April 5.
Yovani was impressive from the start of the game as he just gave a one-out single to Nate McLouth in the first inning and had walks in the fourth and fifth innings. He offered just two double plays with his defence.
Gallardo removed the two base runners with double plays and no player was able to attain two runs. He had two strike-outs and two walks in nine overall innings pitched. With Gallardo’s impressive pitching, the Brewers were able to break the four-game losing
streak in the current season. It was considered as the first win of the Brewers under the new manager Ron Roenicke. He was the last skipper to have a first victory in the continuing season.
Roenicke was content with Gallardo’s pitching and said, “I'm amazed. Knowing when to throw offspeed pitches, knowing when to elevate in the zone, he's got a great feel for it, a great athlete. He's a special guy."
Gallardo had two outs in the eighth inning. Eric Hinske was struck-out on Gallardo’s fastball but at the end of his 111th pitch, he gave up a grounder to short-stop Craig Counsell. Yovani inked a long-term agreement with the Brewers during last
year and had two shut-outs in that season also.
Gallardo expressed his excitement and said, “We have a great team here. We have a great ball team, it was just a matter of turning things around. We're all very excited we did it here very soon and hopefully there's a lot more wins to come.”
Braves’ relief pitcher Eric O’Flaherty and second baseman Dan Uggla combined to get Prince Fielder and Nyjer Morgan out. Martin Prado hammered a hit towards catcher Brian McCann to dig out a run but was not completed.
The Brewers had the worst start to the regular season this year as they posted only 13 runs in five games. Ryan Braun made the first run of the game against Braves’ starter Derek Lowe after six innings.
Lowe had seven strike-outs in six pitched innings and permitted an RBI single to Braun in the third inning. Gallardo made a single against Lowe with one out after the strike-outs of Rickie Weeks, Morgan and Braun. The Brewers took a 1-0 lead with that run.
The Brewers put in a good performance as they managed to restrict the Braves’ offence. Atlanta fought hard, but it was not enough to get a victory against the Brewers.
