Yu Darvish becomes the centre of attraction as bidding process enters second phase – MLB Update
The deadline for submitting bids for the acquisition of Japanese pitching sensation, Yu Darvish, is finally over and it is now up to his team in Japan to decide which team in Major League Baseball is suitable enough to hold talks with. The team with the
highest bid will be given a period of 30 days to negotiate with Darvish and all teams are expected to go all-out in a bid to ensure the acquisition of this starting pitcher.
If negotiations do not prove to be fruitful, Darvish will return to Japan and will continue playing for his current team. However, if a deal does materialise, the pitcher is expected to make mark in Major League Baseball as early as this coming season. The
bidding process for Darvish was silent and it is still unsure as to which teams made an offer for this pitcher.
The New York Yankees have made it clear that they are not interested in Darvish, but there is no proof available and their assertion will only be believed once negotiations for this player begin in the next few days. An offer from the Yankees is on the cards,
but nothing is certain yet and it will be interesting to see how things develop in this context. CC Sabathia is the only recognised pitcher at the Bronx and Yu’s addition to the roster can do wonders to the confidence of the bull-pen.
American League stalwarts Texas Rangers have lost their ace, C.J. Wilson, to the Los Angeles Angels and are in dire need of a pitcher capable enough of leading the rotation. The Rangers are slightly inflexible in their payroll, but Darvish is one pitcher
for whom the Rangers will be willing to spend some extra amount as well.
Chicago Cubs is another team which can potentially attract Darvish. Theo Epstein has taken charge of the baseball operations at the ballclub and is fully aware of the process. Money should not be an issue for the Cubs and it will come down to how badly the
management needs him.
It will, nevertheless, be interesting to see how things materialise.
