Yu Darvish’s signing with Texas Rangers brings annoyance for Los Angeles Angels – MLB News
Japanese star Yu Darvish has signed with Texas Rangers for $60 million but his recent signing with the Rangers management has left the Los Angeles Angels franchise pretty upset.
Yu Darvish, who is considered one of the top prospects in the game and one of the true pitching talents outside the US, was notably chased by the Los Angeles Angels franchise in recent past. The entire Angels’ franchise was after Darvish and his agent to come and play for their team in Los Angeles.
Earlier, all including, Darvish, his agent and the Angels' executives seemed pretty confident for a potential long term deal but at the last hour things somehow went wrong for all of them and the probable deal collapsed.
Later, Yu Darvish moved his attention towards another Major League team, the Texas Rangers, who eventually succeeded, bringing Darvish into their franchise for some hefty money.
However, during his talks with the Rangers, the Angels did not say anything especially regarding Darvish’s potential deal with them.
But later, as soon as Darvish reached an agreement with the Rangers, the Angels’ international scouting director Clay Daniel said in the media,
“It would have taken millions of dollars, an astronomical amount, to get him then. But his father wasn't going to have any of that. He had the stuff, and his feel for the strike zone was pretty special. He made his mark in Japan. Now he has a chance to make his mark here. He was a fungo bat, about 6 feet 4 and 160 pounds, and he was only throwing 85-88 mph.”
Acey Kohrogi, who is director of Asian operations, also stated that Darvish and his potential contract, “There's this misconception that we start learning about players when they're ready to come to the U.S. Actually, we've already known about them for a long time.”
These executives know that now time has passed for them to look again where they went wrong on offering Darvish a potential deal. But these unambiguous statements do suggest towards their uneasiness when they heard Darvish made a deal with Texas Rangers.
