Yucca walking sticks?

Question

I have several yucca plants in bloom and heard that the tall part makes great walking sticks. Do I wait for the stick to dry on the plant or do I cut it off before it gets too dry? What is the best sealer to put on it when I have it off?

Yucca isn't even wood, it's a flower stem so it's very soft It's hard to believe it going to support any weight at all.
