  1. elo's answer was good but he neglected to mention something.  Yes, he was right about how you use it to switch cards with your deck, but that's what I have my premium tin that contains like 500 cards for.  A side deck is used in a match (a combination of 3 duels) which is used in a tournament.

Ok, new paragraph.  Many experienced players sometimes realize that they don't need a certain card in their deck after dueling someone, or they would like to use a certain card (conveniently located in their side deck).  So they put in the card they don't need or they take out the card they do need.

For example, a lockdown deck often involves using cards like messenger of peace (all monsters with 1500 atk or more can't attack), and gravity bind (monsters with 4 stars or more can't attack)to lock down your opponents strong monsters, (both are spells/traps) while using a wall monster with relatively high defense to keep you from attacking (like millenium shield or giant soldier of stone).  However, using a card like heavy storm, you can knock out the gravity bind and messenger of peace and then attack the wall monster with a stronger one so you can destroy the other player's life points (the lockdown deck example is based on Mototani's life shaver deck from the Yugioh Spirit Caller video game).  But you didn't think to add your heavy storm!  However, you do have 1 in your side deck.  So in between the 3 duels in a match, you add the heavy storm to your deck.

    Got it?

  2. the side deck in yugioh, its what its name is

    the sidedeck

    haha.

    but seriously

its usually 15 cards that arent part of your deck

but you can exchange them into your deck to either change strategies

or use a card to make down your opponent

thats what its mainly used for!

like if you have a deck that does well with most decks, but needs cards to switch in and out of incase of certain deck!

a side deck is perfect for that!

thats pretty much it, side decks can really help!

    hope this helps!

    good luck!

  3. Side Deck: Must follow the forbidden/limited list. If there is an unlimited card in your deck and side deck you are only allowed 3 of it in your main deck and side deck combined. if its semi limited then you are allowed 2 combined, if its limited then you are allowed only 1 in either main deck or side deck.

In a Match there are 3 duels/games. After your first duel in a 3 game Match you and your opponent are allowed to take cards from your side deck and replace them with cards in your main deck. Rule is that if you take one card from the side deck you must take one card from your main deck and switch them. So basically after you are done side decking you'll still have 15 cards at the end. If you are wondering if you don't have to have a side deck at all and still play, yes you are allowed. You must have 0 or 15 cards for a side deck.

Side Decks have selected cards that are mostly used against specific deck types for example decks like Gladiator Beasts, Lightsworns.

Here are some examples of cards you would put in your side deck and the purpose.

Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror- This card negates effects of Dark monsters on the field or in the graveyard when the effect activates.

Put this card in your main deck when you are up against a Dark Return Deck.

Kinetic Soldier- This monster gets a 2000 ATK boost against  warrior type monsters.

Put this in your main deck when you are up against a Six Samurai deck.

    Good luck!
