Yuichi Sugita destroys Olivier Sajous; moves into the main draw – Atlanta Tennis Championships 2011
22-year-old Japanese contestant, Yuichi Sugita, qualified for the main rounds of Atlanta Tennis Championships, after defeating Olivier Sajous of Haiti in the final round qualifiers in Atlanta, the United Sates on Monday afternoon.
The one-sided contest took just one hour and twenty minutes to conclude, with Sugita registering a comprehensive straight sets victory at 6-2, 6-3, to book a berth in the main draws of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals)
World Tour 250 tournament.
Seeded at number three in the qualifying draw, Sugita displayed his true class and belligerent form in Monday’s matchup to drown the Haitian competitor in the most authoritative manner. The Japanese beat his opponent in every segment
of the game to come out as the winner in the second set. His brilliant serve, backed up by brilliant return game and rock solid baseline defence held key to his success in the qualifying competition.
Third seed Sugita was phenomenal with his serve in the opener, amazingly banging 80 per cent of it on target and bagging 14 out of 16 first serve points in the set. He was off to a flyer in the first set, as he won the opening
four points to register a serve break in the very first game of the match. Sajous appeared in a terrible condition right from the start, spraying a number of miss hit strokes all over the court to award some easy points to the aggressive Japanese contestant.
The Haitian failed to recover from the early loss in the opener and slumped further in the seventh game when Sugita nailed another crucial serve break to reach 5-2. The Japanese served of the opening set in the most convincing
way at 6-2, to get one-set lead in the competition.
The following set brought no luck for Sajous, who again dropped serve in the first game to trail 0-3 lead early. Although the Japanese dropped his serve precision to 55 per cent in the second set, he still reeled off 14 first serve
points to keep the upper hand in the game. Another break point conversion from the Japanese sends him to 5-2, serving for the match. Sajous finally registered his first serve break in the eighth game but it came way too late, as Sugita cracked in his third
break point of the set to seal victory at 6-3.
Sugita will play against Ryan Harrison of the United States in the first round of the main draws of Atlanta Tennis Championships on Tuesday.
