Yuki Bhambri accepts ‘terrible display’ in the second set – Tennis News
Yuki Bhambri accepted the fact that he was absolutely owned by his opponent Daniel King Turner in the second set of the match when he was forced to witness an embarrassing bagel 0-6. He was playing the first single rubbers match
of the Davis Cup relegation tie, earlier on Friday.
Turner is ranked 382 in the world and the 20-year-old Bhambri is 203 spot higher than him but still he failed to respond to the onslaught of his rival and went down miserably in the second phase of the match. He explained the situation
and his feelings in the following fashion, “It was not the kind of tennis I like to play but I am glad I pulled it off. I played terribly to lose the second set 0-6 but the team kept supporting me. I did not want to lose another set at love and that would
have been very embarrassing. When you lose a set 0-6, it means you are not doing anything right. It's not the best tennis that I played. I wanted to win one game and gradually gained in confidence.”
The coach of Indian team, Nandan Bal was furious on the performance of one of his representatives but accepted that he had some fitness issues prior to the encounter and was completely dehydrated even by the smallest of rallies.
He confessed, “We kept him hydrated. That was the key. A player can break tactically but if he break downs physically, then it's tough. He was incredible physically and showed a big heart.”
Unfortunately the inferior ranked Turner incurred a calf injury during the encounter. The performance witnessed a major dip after the left calf pain. His body movements were limited and the shot selection was narrowed down that
gave an edge to the Indian who took advantage; advanced to the net on multiple occurrences and won points by rotating the mix of slow and fast shots.
It was a good result for the Indian team but not a convincing one as expected by the team lead. Turner was disappointed to see such a terrible incident happening to her at the crunch moment in the match.
