Yuki Shirai grabs Men’s 200m backstroke title – 2012 FINA Swimming World Cup, Berlin
Yuki Shirai of Japan grabbed gold medal of the men’s 200m breaststroke on day two of the 2012 FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup in Berlin, Germany on Sunday, October 21.
Shirai dictated terms to his opponents in the distant backstroke discipline and ensured his place on top of the medal rostrum for gold medal. He faced tough competition from Hayate Matsubara of Japan in the first half but managed to overpower him over the
wall for gold medal.
With his astonishing efforts, Shirai overpowered his opponents in a comfortable manner as he tapped the wall for gold medal with a timing of 1 minute and 49.94 seconds.
His title claiming effort remained 1.99 seconds apart and surfaced on the wall as second position holder with a timing of 1 minute and 51.93 seconds.
The silver medallist was traced by Ashley Delaney of Australia, who was 0.89 seconds apart and surfaced on the wall as third position holder with a timing of 1 minute and 52.82 seconds.
Fourth spot of the event was chased by Leonardo De Deus of Brazil, who was 0.84 seconds away from his foregoing finisher and posted a time of 1 minute and 53.66 seconds.
The Brazilian swimmer enjoyed a benefit of 1.98 seconds over Yannick Lebherz, who proved his eligibility for fifth spot of the race by reporting a time of 1 minute and 55.64 seconds.
Sixth position of the event was obtained by Radoslaw Kawecki of Poland, who was 1.03 seconds slower and cruised his way towards the wall with a timing of 1 minute and 56.67 seconds.
Subsequently, Kawecki was traced by Emmanuel Vanluchene of Belgium, who appeared on the finishing wall for seventh place by submitting a time of 1 minute and 58.32 seconds.
Vanluchene remained 0.76 seconds faster from Tibor Lukacovsky of Czech Republic, who was unable to surpass any of his competitors and finished eighth in the event by reporting an effort of 1 minute and 59.08 seconds.
In addition, Shirai was extremely pleased with his title claiming effort and said that he will train harder in future to defend his title.
