Yulia Putintseva downs Donna Vekic; moves into Girls’ singles quarter-final – Wimbledon 2011
Another seeded player makes it into the quarter-finals of the Girls’ singles event at Wimbledon Championships, when the seventh seed Yulia Putintseva of Russia won her third round clash against Donna Vekic of Croatia on Thursday.
The contest was played on Court seven of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London, England, with the Russian coming out as the winner in the third set. Putintseva laboured for one hour and fifty six minutes before
she finally took down the Croat competitor at 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, to make her way to the final eight of the Grand Slam tournament.
Vekic was in control of the game at the beginning of the match and it appeared as if the Russian will fall in straights but a dramatic turnaround in the second set made all the anticipations wrong. After dropping the opening set
in a poor manner, Putintseva made a very strong comeback in the next set to level the matchup with one set a piece. She then sustained her winning momentum in the final set as well and blew away the bewildered Croatian to conclude a convincing victory.
Both girls were equally good with their first serve, reaching about 55 per cent mark throughout the contest. Putintseva coughed seven double faults in the matchup, but compensated for them by registering 22 winners and clinching
30 out of 46 first serve points in the matchup.
Both contestants had seven chances each to break the opponent’s serve, with Vekic converting four and Putintseva cashing in five to finish on the winning side in the end. Putintseva remained tentative throughout the contest and
made only five net approaches, converting all of them to her advantage with elegant cross-court winners.
The Croat had a blistering start to the matchup, breaking the opponent’s serve early to pressurise her with her aggressive moves. Putintseva dropped her serve once more and was soon found in a miserable condition, trailing 2-5
with Vekic serving for the set. The Croat finished off the opening set in the most authoritative manner but suddenly lost all of her steam in the very next set to let Putintseva back in the game.
Putintseva made a tremendous recovery to reel off the next two sets 6-2, 6-3, to seal victory and moved into the quarter-final draws of the mega event. The Russian will take on Indy De Vroome of Netherlands in the quarter-final
clash on Friday for a berth in the semi-finals of the Wimbledon Championships.
