Yulia Putintseva dumps Karen Barbat to clear the first round – e-Boks Open 2012
Russian teenager, Yulia Putintseva, displayed her true potential and tennis skills to overcome the local wildcard entrant, Karen Barbat, in the opening round of the e-Boks Open on Monday. The contest lasted for just one hour and
52 minutes before the 17-year-old Russian wrapped it up in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, marching into the second round of the tournament.
Being a part of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International Tour, the competition was played on the indoor hard courts of Copenhagen, Denmark, ending to the dismay of the local crowd. Barbat posed decent resistance in the
matchup but she wasn’t good enough to take on the fury of the Russian opponent. Putintseva cruised through the opening set and once she got in her winning groove, the 17-year-old never looked back at the Dane competitor. She clobbered her 10th victory
of the running season to dispose Barbat in her very first match of the tournament.
Although Putintseva had terrible first serve accuracy in the match, she kept winning crucial points to ease her way to victory in style. She had a below par serve precision of just 49 per cent and spilled out seven double faults
to gift away some un-fought points to the Dane opponent. However, the Russian youngster belted 11 thudding aces and dropped merely nine points on his first serve, bagging 30 out of 39 points, en route to victory.
A total of 10 serve breaks were exchanged in the entire matchup, with Putintseva registering six and Barbat securing just four to finish on the losing side in the end. The Dane had her chances in the matchup but she kept frittering
away the priceless opportunities to remain at a disadvantage throughout the competition.
Action started right from the beginning, as the Russian teenager nailed two serve breaks right up to lead 4-0. Barbat came up with two successive breaks of serve later but a decisive break point conversion from Putintseva in the
ninth game sealed the opener for her at 6-4.
The Dane registered two more serve breaks in the following set but the Russian replied with three cracking ones to drive her out of the competition in style.
