Yulia Putintseva trounces past Veronika Kapshay to secure a final four spot – Siberia Cup 2011
Third seeded local star, Yulia Putintseva, swallowed past sixth seed, Veronika Kapshay, with double breadsticks at the Siberia Cup 2011 on Wednesday. She registered an exceptional 6-1, 6-1, score line over the Ukrainian to book
a semi-final place at this final ITF event taking place on the indoor hard courts in Tyumen, Russia.
With the crowd support, the high spirited Putintseva flashed past the Ukrainian, ranked 271st in the Sony Ericsson WTA Premier Rankings, in 45 minutes on their second meeting. The Russian not only maintained her winning
record against the 25-year-old Kapshay but also inched closer to her fourth year-to-date title.
The 16-year-old Russian blasted powerful ground strokes to go on a five games killing spree before Kapshay could hold on. She then held her serve in the seventh game and pocketed the first breadstick in 20 minutes. Putintseva eased
past her opponent without facing any breakpoint and capitalised on both serve breaks in the set.
World number 246, Putintseva kept momentum rolling into the following set and held her opening serve in the first game. After the Ukrainian plucked her serve in the following game, she unleashed flurry of ground strokes to reel
off next five games consecutively and earned the second breadstick in 25 minutes. The Russian hold back all three breakpoint she faced and cashed in both break chances to dominate.
Next up for the local starlet is the top seed, Olga Savchuk, who pounced over the eighth seed, Daria Gavrilova, with a breadstick to set-up this clash. The highest ranked player of the tournament, Savchuk, quickly formulated a
6-2, 6-1 score line against the Russian.
Belarusian Polina Pekhova will join the third seed in the final four. She stunned the fifth seeded Ukrainian, Irina Buryachok, in a three setter nail biter match on their first meeting. The 19-year-old Belarusian stayed on track
in the opening set to capture her maiden career title. She capitalised on a single break chance to clinch the opener with a 6-3 score line.
The Ukrainian re-focused in the second set and after exchanging two serve breaks, she converted another break opportunity to her advantage in the end and sealed the equaliser by winning seven games to five. World number 365, Pekhova
raised the bar of her game again in the final set. She breezed to wipe out opening four games in a row before Buryachok could hold on. The Belarusian then held her remaining serves and pocketed the decider with a 6-2 win.
