Yuliya Beygelzimer of Ukraine defeated the 30-years-old Italian, Flavia Pennetta, in the second round of the Barcelona Ladies Open on Thursday. She ousted her in three-sets 6-2, 6(5)-7, 6-4.
It was a stunning contest overall but the superior ranked player was not able to handle the onslaught of her opponent and bowed down to her class and aggression. The overall time consumed in playing three sets was almost two and
half hours and the crowd in the arena was thrilled to witness such an eye-startling event at their disposal.
The opening set started off with serve holds at both ends. First five games went by without any drama before the underdog Ukrainian stunned the Italian with her stunning display of cross-court and down the line winners. She won
two back-to-back breakpoints in the final part of the set to win the first action packed part of the match.
Beygelzimer continued to pressurise her opponent throughout the second set. Pennetta took lead at the start in the third game and doubled it with another breathtaking display in the following return game. However, she was unable
to hold on to it as her opponent bullied her way back in the following four games and took lead in the ninth game.
Similar display at both ends enforced the tie-breaker round into play and Pennetta with all the experience in the world bagged the critical point in the end to stay in the match. She started the final set in startling fashion;
winning breakpoint in the second game and cruising away to a lead of 3-0.
However, her opponent fought back in the fifth game and moreover took the lead in the seventh game that turned the tables on the Italian. Both players registered tight serve holds in the end that favoured the 204th ranked
Ukrainian who marched on into the quarter-final stage of the tournament.
It was the biggest upset of the day. The Ukrainian starlet will take on the winner of the match the third seed Slovak, Dominika Cibulkova, and the Czech tennis ace, Klara Zakopalova. Cibulkova is in emphatic form and the hot favourite
to win the contest.
