Yuliya Beygelzimer stuns Petra Rampre to qualify for the main round – Barcelona Ladies Open 2012
World number 204, Yuliya Beygelzimer, stunned the sixth seed Slovenian, Petra Rampre, to qualify for the main round draw of the tournament. She bullied her way to a straight sets triumph 6-3, 6-2; grabbing the victory in a hour
and 24 minutes.
It was the first face-off between the two athletes and Rampre had no idea of what she was going to witness at the Red clay courts of Barcelona. She was expected to win the match with ease but was completely astonished at the supreme
power play from her rival.
A swap of breakthroughs commenced the proceedings that were followed up with thumping serve holds. Both players swapped breakpoints for the second time in the set to push the scores at 3-3. Beygelzimer registered an easy serve
hold before crushing her competitor in the following game to register a lead of 5-3.
Suddenly, the set tilted in favour of the underdog and Rampre was forced to break serve in the following game but she failed to do so. It was expected that the Slovenian contestant will fight her way back into the match and enforce
the third set into play but that was not the case.
She was broken in the opening game of the second set. Despite fighting her way back with a breakthrough in the fourth game, she was broken right back in the fifth game that reinstated the lead of her competitor. The Ukrainian starlet
was in stunning form and registered the third successful breakpoint of the match in the seventh game to gust away with a lead of 3-2.
The 32-years-old Slovenian was forced to break serve in the following game to enhance her chances of a comeback. It was a ‘do or die’ situation for her and she wasn’t equipped enough to take on the in-form Ukrainian.
A sizeable crowd that gathered to witness this encounter was ecstatic at such a marvellous upset. The Ukrainian has marched into the first round of the tournament. Rampre was poor with the breakpoint conversion rate. She created
12 opportunities but only transferred six points to her bank. This was the main reason of her downfall in the match.
