Yunel Escobar shipped to Tampa Bay Rays through trade by Miami Marlins - MLB Update
Shortstop Yunel Escobar, who was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays by the Miami Marlins through a massive fire sale, has not lasted long in the team as he has been traded to the Tampa Bay Rays.
It may look bizarre to many that a player who was just included on the roster has been removed before being allowed to play even a single season with the team.
According to the team management, his unwillingness to shift from shortstop position to third base prompted the club to trade him.
The move has aggravated concerns of the fans. Already worried about chances of the team in the upcoming season, this has certainly added to their woes.
The trade has further reduced the payroll of the club, giving indications that the Marlins lack resources to build a strong team for the future.
By the time Miami carried out the fire sale, it was believed that they will spend the saved money for hiring new players. So far they have not done anything in this regard.
Far from buying players, they are continuing with their conservative approach.
It seems that management has lost hope about the 2013 season. Paying little attention to the free agents and some non-tendered players reflect their pessimism.
It appears as if they have considered adding new players in the team unnecessary and a waste of money.
If this is the case, then the fans are seriously being betrayed. The taxpayers, who paid the bulk of the money for the construction of the Marlins new ballpark, are being deceived.
Owner of the Marlins, Jeffrey Loria got the ballpark construction project approved on the pretext that he will make the team one of the most competitive Major League Baseball clubs.
As he is not living up to his claim so far, fans have the reason to be disappointed and criticise him.
Escobar will be pleased to leave Miami, because changing his position in the field was difficult for him.
He will look to act as shortstop in Tampa Bay and not being asked to do the same that the Marlins nearly forced him for.
It will be interesting to see how the Marlins respond to the criticism of the fans owing to their latest trade of Escobar.
