Yuniesky Betancourt and Jimmy Rollins in the Milwaukee Brewers’ list for a contract – MLB News
The Milwaukee Brewers have intensified their search for a short-stop. While there are many free agents available currently and the list is quite appealing, the Brewers are said to have been considering the Philadelphia Phillies’ Jimmy Rollins.
Considering the fact that Jose Reyes, the New York Mets slugger, is too expensive a deal for the Brewers to opt for right now, the five-year deal that Rollins offers is something that the Brewers have decided to look into.
Brewers’ general manager Doug Melvin is reported to be interested in talking to Rollins’ agent Dan Lozano. Although no offer has formally been made, the meeting is being given a lot of importance.
"You never know who says, 'We're willing to take a one-year deal and then test the market next year," Melvin said. "You don't know. The worst thing is, you find that someone signed a one- or two-year deal with someone else and you say.”
Yuniesky Betancourt and Jose Reyes carry a very big price tag for the Brewers to make an offer. Nonetheless, reports are making the rounds suggesting Betancourt still has a chance to become a part of the Brewers.
"We do have a need because we don't have anybody signed at this point," Melvin said. "Like I said at the end of the year, I would be satisfied with having 'Yuni' back. I think he did a better job than some of the critics [argue]."
Currently a free agent, this Milwaukee Brewers hitter maintained an average of .252 in 2011 season with no less than 13 homers to his credit, having had 68 RBIs with a .271 OBP. His career average stands at .268 with 60 homers adorning his stats.
Melvin also referred to the fact that Betancourt himself is also interested in returning to the Brewers. He has inarguably been one of the most effective short-stops around with 152 appearances that he had this year with 556 at-bats.
What remains to be seen, however, is if the Brewers endorse Rollins name first and then signing a new contract with Betancourt whose performance had been reassuringly positive throughout the season.
