Yuvraj to be honoured by Punjab government – Cricket News Update
The Punjab Government is all set to honour all-rounder http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750’s cricket World Cup victory in March 2011.
The ceremony will be held tomorrow, at which the cricketer will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 1 crore by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Deputy Chief Minister http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sukhbir-Singh-Manhas-c91724 Badal and Member Parliament and President Punjab Olympic Association S S Dhindsa,
as confirmed by an official spokesman.
The 30-year-old was awarded the Player of the Tournament award for the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 World Cup 2011, during which he claimed a total of 15 scalps, scored 362 runs, and won four Player of the Match awards. He was the 8th highest run-scorer of the tournament,
and 6th highest wicket-taker.
The left-hander took a vital 2 for 57 in the historic clash between India and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 at the Wankhede Stadium in
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 on April 2, 2011.
The flamboyant batsman last played for the national side in a Test match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 at Kolkata in November 2011, after which he was diagnosed with a rare germ cell tumour located between his lungs. The tumour, first presumed to be benign, was later
diagnosed as malignant, and the player was flown to the Cancer Research Institute, located in Boston, USA, for chemotherapy.
He underwent treatment earlier this year under the supervision of Dr. Lawrence Eisenhower, who also treated Tour De France veteran Lance Armstrong, from whose example Yuvraj drew a lot of inspiration during his recovery.
Post-treatment, he pointed out that to go from a victory such as the World Cup to being diagnosed with a grave illness was hard to adjust to.
“… the World Cup was the highest high of my career. And from there to plunge into the lowest phase of life, it was very hard to digest. At first, I didn't believe it was happening and I was not ready to accept it,” he admitted, adding that it had taken him
two months to come to terms with his condition.
The cricketer returned to India recently and faced a rousing welcome. He clarified, at a press conference, that he would be focusing primarily on regaining his health, and would see how his body responded to training and workouts before making his way back
onto the cricket field.
