Yvonne Meusburger conquers Hlavackova and Bad Gastein – Tennis news
Local star, Yvonne Meusburger, outclassed the Czech challenger, Andrea Hlavackova, in straight sets at the Nurnberger Gastein Ladies 2013 on Sunday. She penned down a 7-5, 6-2 victory to capture her first WTA crown at this outdoor clay court event being
held in Bad Gastein, Austria.
The Austrian number one, Meusburger, unleashed her skills and abilities to not only capture the first WTA title of her career but also reach her career best ranking of 58 in WTA Premier Rankings. Meusburger was coming off making a final showing in Budapest
last week. She kept momentum rolling at this International-level tournament and won the tournament without losing a single set.
The Austrian veteran commented in an on-court interview after earning the glory, “From the first year I played this tournament to now, I still can't believe I've actually managed to win it. Last week I was in the final of Budapest and I came into Bad Gastein
with a very good feeling. I think I played well from the first match and I'm so happy to be the champion now. I need a few days to realize this. I'm speechless. It's hard to put my thoughts into words.”
Meusburger made a convincing entry in this match. She was about to lose the set at 4-5, 0-15 but stayed focused and stroke out the last three games. As a result, the Austrian pulled out the opener with a 7-5 score line.
The Dornbirn native maintained her intensity in the proceeding set. She reeled off six of eight games and sealed the deal in one hour and 39 minutes.
The Czech on the other hand was playing her first WTA singles final. She has never got past quarter-final stage at any WTA event before. With this impressive performance, she became a runner-up and cracked back into Top 100.
The Plzen native reflected in a post match presser, “All credit to her - she fought it from me and while I did everything I could, it wasn't enough. I'm still happy to have made my first WTA final.”
Earlier that day, Sandra Klemenscs and Andreja Klepac captured their first WTA doubles title after crushing Kristina Barrois and Eleni Daniilidou with a breadstick.
