Yvonne Smith captures Women’s 50m freestyle gold: Day three -
South African LC Nationals
Yvonne Smith of Fsa-FS captured gold medal of the Women’s 50m freestyle in the Multi-Class category of S14-S15 on day three of the South African Long Course Nationals at the KZN Aquatic-Kings Park Centre in Durban on Wednesday, April 18.
The 21-year-old Smith, who qualified as the second best swimmer in the final round, surged in the playoff to ensure her top finish on the podium for gold medal.
Smith remained dominant over her competitors throughout the one-lap freestyle discipline and with her magnificent efforts, she tapped the finishing end with the timing of 31.24 seconds for gold medal.
Her impeccable effort was chased by Cornel Loubser of NFS-NF, who followed her on the medal rostrum for silver medal by touching the wall with the timing of 29.76 seconds.
Her wonderful effort was trailed by Christel Kriel of MP-MP, who settled on the medal rostrum for bronze medal by touching the wall with the timing of 34.95 seconds.
Kriel was chased by her team-member, Anne Swart, who remained just one second behind her and settled on the finishing end as fourth position holder by touching the wall with the timing of 35.95 seconds.
After that, Natalie Du Toit of CGA-CG proved her mettle for the title of Women’s 50m freestyle in Multi-Class S1-S13 category.
 The 28-year-old Du Toit served notice of her talent as she occupied gold medal of the discipline by touching the wall with the timing of 31.40 seconds.
She was chased by her teammate, Shireen Sapiro, who ended her swim in second best place by touching the wall with the timing of 31.08 seconds.
The 21-year-old Sapiro was chased by Emily A Gray of NTS-NT, who stayed considerably behind her foregoing finisher and tapped the wall with the timing of 32.84 seconds for bronze medal.
Gray was trailed by Tezna Abrahams of WPA-WP, who finished fourth in the discipline by producing an effort of 33.00 seconds.
In addition, the audience enjoyed laudable efforts of all participants in the single-lap event while the podium finishers were invited on the medal rostrum for their stupendous efforts after the session.
