  1. If you are a Yamaha person get a WR for riding in the woods.  You should just get right on the 450 and forget the 250 unless you want the smaller and lighter bike.  The WR is built for the woods, the WR stands for Wide Ratio transmission.  This means it is geared for trail and enduro riding.  There is more gap between gears as opposed to a close ratio trans in motocross bike like the YZF.  The YZF is designed to race on a closed course, not alot of high speed.  The WR is designed to ride off road, more open terrain, higher top speeds.  You are able to utilize one gear for more terrain rather than constantly shifting because you hit the top end of the gear so soon.  I primarily ride trails, single track, fire roads, you name it.  I use 2nd gear probably 80% of the time (I ride a 510 Husky) I can utilize 2nd gear from basically 5 mph up to like 25 with ease.  I will rarely shift to 3rd on the tight woods stuff and the bike is so torquey that I don't need to down shift to 1st unless I completely stop.  The WR is set up this same way not to mention that the cam timing is different that the YZ and the flywheel is heavier too.  All the work is already done to it for woods riding.  My buddy got a YZ426, what did he do to it to ride it here?  Port plate in the exhaust, flywheel weight and change the sprocket.  All that just to make it more managable and less radical so he could ride it in the tight stuff.  If you have to have a Yamaha, get the WR for your style of riding.

  2. yamaha and i have issues, i strongly recommend a 4 stroke bike for what ur doing, so go F-class, but id say get either a suzuki or kawasaki, they have amazing 250fs and wont let u down, plus theyre a little cheaper last i checked. 250fs are great no matter what u get, itll get the job done.

  3. If you have 8 years of experience I would have thought you would have figured out which you like more by now...

I personally would go with the four stroke, less noise, no mixing fuel, and these days they're just as cheap to maintain as two-strokes.

  4. yamaha makes an excellent bike, i used to ride the yz 250, it sits very high and has a ton of compression, as a result it is very hard to kick start. this bike has no shortage of power and i can assure you it will run with the best. throttle response is instant so tight woods riding is a challenge, this 250 may sit to high for you, i'm 6 foot 1 and i still use a cynder block to kick start the thing- wide open riding on this bike....better hold on and don't let go :)...the 125 is a superb bike as well with just the right power and balance for me, parts are easily obtained which is nice to, you can upgrade the reed valve and exhaust if you really wanna get crazy....450's...yur friends must be half crazy!!  :)  good luck...also, info only- i signed in under my wifes account....i am not theresa g!
