Hi, I have a new z-5500 subwoofer made by logitech and when I opened the box, it said not to put within 2ft of any electronic devices due to the magnets in it. Now, I already have a slightly smaller Logitech 680 subwoofer within a half foot of my Xbox 360 and PS3 and so far nothing has happened to them. How powerful are these subwoofer magnets and where are the areas of the subwoofer with the strongest magnetic signal? It seems like this warning is just in case your electronics go bad, you can't blame logitech. How far would you recommend placing the subwoofer from electronics?

  1. All things being equal, 1 foot is probably enough, but its a disclaimer, so they will err on the safe side. Magnetic interference is greatest directly in front or behind the speaker(cone).  Hope that helps.

  2. atleast 4 to 5 feet away. I heard in a recent article on tech.yahoo.com that if a bass shaker, or a subwoofer is placed next to an other device with a strong magnetic field, then there is even a possibility of explosion, electrical fire, etc.

  3. Magnets in speakers, if they are unshielded, can cause the electrical characteristics of some electronic components to change. For example, they could cause problems with a hard drive in a computer.

If the instructions say to keep the subwoofer 2 feet away from electronic equipment, keep them 2 feet away. Or, take the chance that this is overkill and that this warning is just so that you can't blame Logitech if your equipment goes bad. But, don't blame Logitech if this happens.
