Zac Alexander cruises past Alejandro Garbi Caro in quarterfinal – Saskatoon Boast Open 2011
Top seeded Australian Zac Alexander found it a tad difficult to beat the Spanish qualifier Alejandro Garbi Caro in the quarterfinal of the Prairie Autohaus Saskatoon Boast Open 2011.
The two players had taken up the challenge in Canada at the PSA Challenger 10 squash event which is in its tenth year at the YMCA in Saskatoon and offers 10,000 USD as prize money. After fifty minutes of play the top seeded Australian
bounced back from a set down to eventually whitewash Caro with a score 9-11, 11-7, 11-6, and 11-4.
Inaugurating the opening round of the match was Caro as he had clogged the service toss. The Spanish qualifier held his service game and was first to take the lead on the scoreboard. The two players then rallied a few shots and
eventually Caro and extended his lead. However, the top seeded Australian was not far and was right at his adversary’s heels. Alexander was able to match a blow for a blow against the qualifier but ultimately Caro was successful in clogging the opening game
to go one up in the match.
During the second set the top seeded Australian turned the tables on the qualifier and it seemed as if he was assessing his opponent’s technique and style before bringing down his wrath. This time the Australian not only smashed
a few rail shots but also played a couple of drop shots which were just above the tin and with very little pace.
This put Caro in a fix as he was unable to lob the ball high off the front wall, and break the law of wrist and hence was unable to make a return. Nevertheless, the top seeded Australian once again bagged an easy set with a score
of 11-7.
The third and the fourth sets were also clogged by the 22 year-old top seeded Australian. By the fourth set Caro was extremely tired and lost most of his stamina. His performance not only plummeted in his service game but also
his return. When all was said and done, the Espanola was restricted to only four points in the fourth set whereas, the top seeded Australian had sealed his victory of the match.
Zac Alexander was able to reserve a berth in the semi final of the tournament where he will be facing fourth seeded Canadian Andrew Schnell.
