Zac Guildford publically apologises for drunken behaviour and assault – Rugby News
Crusaders and New Zealand National Rugby Union's talented and versatile winger, Zac Guildford, has publically apologised for his drunken behaviour and assault during the night of Friday, November
11 in Rarotonga. He made his apology from Rarotonga on Monday, November 14, which was disclosed to the masses by the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU).
Earlier on Friday, Guildford was found wandering around naked. Witnesses reported that his body was wet and was bleeding from different pats of his body. Later, he landed punches to a person
who inquired about his wellbeing. He then fled to a nearby bar, where he landed a blow to the back of the head of an old man celebrating his 60th birthday. He then took the stage before running into the Kitchen of the bar where the staff finally
overpowered him.
Guildford confirmed that he did not remember any of the events, which he performed on the Friday night. He said that he is ashamed of his actions. He added, “There is no doubt that my behaviour
was unacceptable and I am hugely embarrassed by what happened.”
Guildford further added, “I want to apologise to the people who I was involved with and offended that night, the patrons and staff who witnessed my behaviour, and the Cook Island people. I
am truly sorry for what I did.”
Greytown born Guildford is New Zealand professional Rugby Union player. He started his professional Super Rugby Union career with the New Zealand Super Rugby franchise Hurricanes in 2008. He
made 18 appearances for the Hurricanes and scored 35 points. Prior to this, he started his professional Rugby Union career with the New Zealand’s provincial Rugby Union outfit, Hawke’s Bay, in 2007 where he played 52 games and scored 35 impressive tries.
The 22-year-old Guildford switched to Crusaders at the start of the 2010 season. For Crusaders, he has made 30 appearances and scored 60 points. He made his international debut for New Zealand
in 2009.
Guildford was part of the New Zealand outfit, which lifted the 2011 Rugby World Cup title by defeating France in the final of the tournament.
Guildford has expressed his disappointment on the occurrence of the event and admitted he has a drinking problem. He vowed that he would start treatment for his addiction as soon as he returns
to New Zealand. He said, “It's obvious that I need help and I want to get home and to get that help as soon as I can -- I need to sort myself out.”
All Blacks star winger Guildford has also apologized to his family. He said, “I also want to apologise to my family for the embarrassment my actions have caused.”
NZRU and Crusaders has already extended their support to Guildford in such harsh times.
