Zacara lifts Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup Title in British Open Polo Championship
Gonzalo Deltour scored the game-winner in the final chukka, as Zacara, led by Lyndon Lea, powered a 12-11 triumph over Les Lions in the finals and lifted the title of the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup in the 2011 British Open Championship being played at the Cowdray
Park Polo Club in London on July 17, 2011.
It is vital to mention here that it is one of the high-goal handicap tournaments in the world, where eighteen foursomes donned the colours of Cowdray Park Polo Club. The teams featured in the mega event were Zacara, Les Lions, Talandracas, Salkeld, Enigma,
Thai Polo Team, La Golondrina, Dubai, Emlor, Sumaya, La Bamba de Areco, Las Monjitas, Richard Mille, Loro Piana, El Remanso, 1870, Piaget and Stella Artois.
The final match was played between the top two foursomes under the downpour and on a soaking- arena. However, the bad weather made the game more thrilling and increased the thrill.
Though both the squads unfolded the game at fast pace, it was Zacara that obtained first goal of the day in the very early moments. Hilario Ulloa, the ten-goal handicap player from Argentina, made a lengthy ride towards the downfield and volleyed a 150-yard
shot that crossed through the goal-post and put Zacara ahead on the scorecard. In the later time, Las Lions and Zacara exchange one goal each before going into the second period. The first chukka closed out with Zacara leading the score at 2-1.
However, the second period was completely belonged to Las Lions which obtained four goals, while holding Zacara goal-less in the seven and half minute of play. The Lyndon Lea’s foursome was leading the game at 4-2 after the two sets of play.
Both Zacara and Las Lions were in action in the third set of play. The strikers from Zacara cranked up their offence and notched three goals against the two of Las Lions. However, the Zacara team was trailing by a single goal at the half-time, 6-5.
After a brilliant show, the Zacara tied the knots at 6-6, when Ulloa converted a penalty-shot from the long distance. However, the Las Lions made a counter-attack and scored another four goals against the two of Zacara.
In the fifth chukka, Zacara obtained a goal on a penalty-conversion, while holding Las Lions at bay throughout the period. In a hardly-fought final period, Zacara levelled the score at 10-10 at the start of the period. In the later time, both the teams swapped
one goal and took the score at 11-11. It was Gonzalo Deltour who notched the game winning-goal and managed the victory as well as British Open Polo Championship title for Zacara.
