Zach Britton beats Bartolo Colon, as Baltimore Orioles shutout New York Yankees 2-0 – MLB Update
The Baltimore Orioles’ starter Zach Britton expressed a brilliant pitching performance in his fastballs and sliders to destroy the New York Yankees strong batting squad 2-0 in the first of the two scheduled meetings at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on Sunday,
August 28 to extend their winning streak to six games.
As the first game of the four-game series was postponed due to heavy rain on August 27, both teams got a chance to relax and devised a better strategy. Zach Britton acted as per the expectations of his manager Buck Showalter and crushed the Yankees.
"When you pitch like that, you feel like you're playing in a baseball game instead of trying to survive," Orioles’ manager Buck Showalter said.
Britton was destroyed by the Yankees in the last start on July 13, when he consumed nine runs.
"I wasn't thinking about getting revenge or anything," Britton said. "You have to have a short memory."
He has to struggle hard to take his revenge as he pitched career high 120 pitches, allowing four hits and one walk. However, the five strike-outs he made is important for the Orioles. He punched Robinson Cano out two times, sent Mark Teixeira and Nick Swisher
to camp one time each. It was his eighth win that improved his record to 8-9 with a 4.28 ERA in 2011 regular season.
Yankees’ starter Bartolo Colon was also impressive before the seventh inning, in which he allowed his first run. Colon did not let the Orioles stabilise in his first six innings but in the seventh he allowed two hits to receive a scoreless tie shattering
run.
Nick Markakis was at the second base when Vladimir Guerrero entered and drove in a single on the first pitch he faced of Colon in the seventh inning. It was the Guerrero’s 45 RBI single in this season. Colon allowed another run up the middle of the eighth
inning to J.J. Hardy.
The loss may cause serious damage to the Yankees’ journey to the post-season, as they are in close competition with Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays. Boston is leading the American League with 82 wins while Yankees are on second with 78 wins.
If they make it through the second outing of the day their number will improve to 79 and it will create a real problem for the Red Sox to protect first position.
