Zach Johnson heads for Memphis, aims another good finish
Zach Johnson, the winner of this year’s Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, is set to get back in action at the FedEx St. Jude Classic, scheduled to start from Thursday, June 7, 2012.
Johnson is looking forward to making another good finish at the TPC Southwind in Memphis prior to the start of the US Open in the following week.
In the last three tournaments, he has recorded two second-place finishes along with a win at Colonial, which has put him among the hottest players in the second major event of the year.
Therefore, he decided not to skip the St. Jude Classic, as he believes that it will help him maintain his momentum for the next week.
"I like to play, I like to be in the competitive mode going into a major," the 36-year-old American told reporters on Tuesday.
"I get the question a lot, 'Why are you playing Memphis?', and usually the premise behind that question is, one, it's in front of the U.S. Open, and two, it just seems like a lot of guys skip this event".
"I don't know why they skip it. I think this is one of the most underrated tournaments on the PGA Tour. Once you experience it, I think it's pretty obvious," he added.
He also told that he loves to compete at the par-70 course that allows the players to break the par anytime.
Following his win at Colonial, he took a week off and did not appear in the Memorial Tournament.
In the meantime, the world number two Rory McIlroy is also headed for Memphis in order to tune-up his game for the title defence at the Olympic Club.
McIlroy is currently passing through the worst patch of his career, as he missed the cut in each of the last three tournaments he played on the PGA Tour and European Tour.
Golf commentators believe that McIlroy has went completely out of focus and if he fails to make a comeback at the St. Jude Classic, it will become really difficult for him to defend the Open title this year.
