Zach Johnson leads Crowne Plaza Invitational after the opening round
Zach Johnson fired a six-under par 64 in the opening round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational to take a one-stroke lead over four players at the Colonial Country Club on Thursday, May 24, 2012.
Johnson is now aiming his second victory in the event, as he won the 2010 edition of the event, especially when he has two second-place finishes in the last three starts he made on the PGA Tour.
On the opening day of the event, he got off to a great start, as he recorded a birdie on the very first hole (10th) he played.
Thereafter, he managed to save two pars followed by an amazing streak of consecutive four birdies starting from the par-three 13th hole.
On the front nine of the course, he did not make many birdies except the one. However, he did avoid making bogeys in the round and took the top spot early in the day.
“I drove the ball fine,” he said. “I just kept the golf course in front of me. I attacked when I could attack. I had a couple of nice saves when I needed it. I think I missed the shortest -- the putt I had for birdie that was the shortest I think I missed.
But then I made my share, too. So it probably did even out in the end. I felt like I could have had some more. I made a couple of bombs, too. I've got zero complaints. I controlled my trajectory in the wind nice”.
In the meantime, the defending champion David Toms had to suffer the worst round of 2012 PGA Tour season, as he recorded a four-over par 74.
He started his campaign on the back nine of the course and recorded a bogey on the very first hole he played. Thereafter, the meltdown on the par-three 13th forced him to sign a double bogey, which took him to three-over for the round.
The front nine of the course also witnessed him make two bogeys and a birdie that forced him to tie for the 104th position.
