Zach Johnson slips to second spot after second round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational
Zach Johnson, the overnight leader at the Crowne Plaza Invitational, carded a three-under par 67 in the second round to finish two strokes behind the halfway leader Jason Dufner on Friday, May 25, 2012.
Johnson got off to a confident start as he recorded an amazing eagle on the first hole followed by a birdie on the second.
However, a bogey on the very next hole offset the birdie he made on the previous hole. Thereafter, he parred seven holes until he made a streak of birdie-bogey-birdie-bogey starting from the 11th hole.
“Today, it was good. I got off to a great start, that's always nice," he said. “I hit a couple of bumps along the way. I made some good saves, gave myself some opportunities that I missed. And then got some momentum going on the back but it seems like every
time I made a birdie I put myself in a pretty difficult predicament to make par”.
The final birdie of the round on the 16th hole helped him finish two strokes ahead of two players who tied for the third position at the Colonial Country Club.
“I finished strong. A good save on 15. A good birdie on 16 and another good save on 17. And 18, I'll take a 4 there. I hit a good putt, misread it. I'm excited about tomorrow,” he said.
While talking about the weather conditions, he said that it was gustier. Yet, he believes that it was pretty comfortable to make shots compared to the conditions that the players had to face during the opening round of the event.
Dufner, the winner of last week’s HP Byron Nelson Championship, recorded another great round of a six-under par 64 to surge to the top of the leaderboard while entering the weekend.
He is no doubt the hottest player in the field of 123 players because of his recent form on the tour.
If he succeeds in recording a victory in the event, he will become the first player to register wins in Dallas and Fort Worth in the same season, since Ben Hogan won both the events in 1946.
