Zach Johnson takes sixth spot in the US Ryder Cup standings
Zach Johnson has booked the sixth spot in the US Ryder Cup standings following a win in the Crowne Plaza Invitational at the Colonial Country Club last week.
Johnson has been playing well right from the start of the 2012 PGA Tour season and picked up pace from the RBC Heritage in April when he took the sole second place on the leaderboard.
Thereafter, he appeared in the Wells Fargo Championship and failed to impress his fans, as he recorded a tie for the 69th position.
Yet, the worst finish of the season did not shatter his confidence and he bounced back strongly with a tie for second place at The Players Championship.
That was the time when he desperately needed a win, as he was consistently making a good mark in each of tournament he was playing.
Therefore, his hard work paid off at the Crowne Plaza Invitational where he edged past Jason Dufner in the final round to take the trophy home for the second time in the history of the event.
Therefore, he earned enough points to make it to the top eight positions in the Ryder Cup standings.
According to the qualifying criteria, the top eight players after the PGA Championship on August 12 will automatically be selected for the US Ryder Cup team.
In the meantime, Jason Dufner, who lost to Johnson with a one-stroke margin at Colonial, has taken the second spot in the US Ryder Cup standings.
He is among the hottest players on the PGA Tour these days because of his two wins and a second place finish in the last four events he played.
“Being a Ryder Cup year and last year with the second place at the PGA got me off to a pretty good start for that,” Dufner said after his win at the HP Byron Nelson Championship. “So that was a bit of a goal to make the Ryder Cup team. So that's becoming
closer to a reality. That's in the back of my mind a little bit. But I've got a lot of golf tournaments left until the Ryder Cup there at the end of September”.
Therefore, if both the players continue to play some good golf in the upcoming events, it will become difficult for other players to replace them on the points table.
