Zaka Ashraf to assume charge tomorrow while his appointment has been challenged at LHC – Cricket News update
The newly-appointed chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Zaka Ashraf, is all set to take over on Friday, October 28, 2011, claimed well placed sources in the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 Cricket Board.
Earlier, Ashraf was due to assume his office charge on Monday, October 24, 2011, but due to the sad demise of the former first lady and the PPP Chairperson Mrs Nusrat Bhutto on Sunday, Monday was declared as a national holiday to mourn her death.
Sources from inside the Pakistan Cricket Board have confirmed that Mr Zaka http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ashraf-c46397 will now formally assume his office on Friday, at PCB headquarters in the Gaddafi Stadium Lahore.
Zaka Ashraf, the former Chairman of Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL), replaced http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ijaz-Butt-c64128 as the PCB chairman with immediate effect on October 11, after Butt completed his three-year tenure. He was appointed as the Chairman by the President of Pakistan,
Asif Ali Zardari, who is also the Patron-in-Chief of Pakistan cricket.
In the meanwhile, Zaka Ashraf’s appointment as the PCB chief has been challenged in the Lahore High Court (LHC).
Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry, the Chief Justice of Lahore High Court, on Wednesday admitted for regular hearing, a petition challenging credentials of Ashraf for the coveted role, as he will be coming to the PCB headquarters without a cricketing background.
The petition filed with the Lahore High Court stated that the appointment of Ashraf was not on merit, rather it was merely a political appointment.
It has been reported that Ashraf will  resign as president of ZTBL before taking over as the pCB chairman. Besides being president of Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited, Ashraf is co-chairman of the Pakistan Sugar http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Punjab-c833 zone.
The litigant's lawyer shared that as per the rules of International Cricket Council, the government of a country cannot make direct appointments in the cricket board, and the right to elect the board's chairman is with the PCB general council.
The petitioner has requested the Lahore High Court to declare the appointment of Zaka Ashraf illegal, preventing him from taking charge of the coveted position.
