Zakry Abdul Latif and Hoon Thie How intent on justifying their selection for the World Badminton Championships 2011
Malaysian Doubles shuttler, Zakry Abdul Latif, is looking forward to give his best in the upcoming World Badminton Championships 2011 along with his Doubles partner, Hoon Thien How.
Zakry was teamed up with Hoon a couple of days ago by Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to represent the country in the mega event. The President of BAM, Ng Chin Chai is quite satisfied about
his decision of pairing Zakry and Hoon and said the decision was made in the best interest of the nation.
World Number 27 pair, Zakry and Hoon, could not get past the qualifying sessions to participate in the Championships, however, BAM used their decretory power and made a controversial decision selecting
Zakry-Hoon over Gan Teik Chai and Tan Bin Shen, who had already qualified for the event.
The pair of Teik Chai and Bin Shen played brilliantly and qualified on merit; at second position, among the Top-24 qualifiers, after the pair of Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong. However, the coaches
believed that Zakry and Hoon had the tendency of being more consistent.
“It was really a big surprise for me when I found out that Hoon and I have been selected for the world meet. I had already given up hope and was pondering over my future plans with Thien How,” said
Zakry. “Coach (Rexy Mainaky) confirmed that Thien How and I will be going. We now have to go all out to do our best to justify the faith that the coaches have in us.”
The Negeri Sembilan shuttler, Zakry and the 24-year-old Hoon were paired after the World Badminton Championships 2009, in which Zakry played with Fairuzizuan Tazari as his doubles partner. The upcoming
mega event will be the first outing of Zakry with Hoon as a partner.
Zakry said, “I competed twice with Fairuzizuan and we did well in India. We fought well before going down to the Chinese pair. This will be my first outing in the championships with Thien How and
we hope to go as far as possible,”
The World Badminton Championships 2011 will be staged at the Wembley Arena in London from August 8 to 14. Malaysia will participate in the event with two Men’s Doubles pairs.
