The Zambian FA have claimed that Godfrey Chitalu actually holds the record for most goals in a calendar year rather than the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Argentina-c2841 and Barcelona forward.
A new controversy has surrounded the world of football amid talk of Lionel Messi’s recent breaking of German legend Gerd Muller’s record.
A lot of hype had surrounded Barcelona’s recent La Liga fixture against Real Betis, as the little genius took up the task of breaking one of the longest held records in the history books.
Before http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604’s fixture, Messi was ranked 2nd in the history of all time goal scoring exploits in a single calendar year with 84 strikes to his name, and he only chased Bayern Munich great, Gerd Muller.
Messi lived up to the occasion and went on to notch a brace, which helped him re-write history.
However, the hype that has surrounded the Barcelona forward for his accomplishment has not gone well with the Zambian FA, as they have gone on to claim a record of their own.
According to the country’s FA, Godfrey Chitalu, who played for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Kabwe-Warriors-c39654 in the early 1970’s, scored even more goals than the Argentine scored this year.
To go by the claims, Kabwe scored a massive 107 goals for both club and country combined, however the figures have not been recorded in the world football.
The African country’s football body has approached FIFA on the matter and have formed an independent committee to check history and let FIFA know about the actual holder of the record.
"Even as the world has been looking at Lionel Messi’s record, breaking Gerd Muller’s, the debate and discussion back here has been why Godfrey’s goals are not being recognised.”
"The team that we have put together is going to calculate all of those goals, recording which ever game or tournament they were scored in.”
"We will then send that to Caf and Fifa so that we can show that, while Messi’s record is there, while Muller’s record is there, the actual record holder in terms of goals per calendar year is actually an African, it’s actually Godfrey Chitalu."
The African great died in 1993, while travelling with the Zambian national team in a plane that crashed.
