Zannetta Lovi acquires Girls 5km gold: Day three – 2012 Australian Open Water Championships
Lawnton’s Zannetta Lovi served notice of her phenomenal talent by acquiring gold medal of the 5km swim in Girls 14 Year Olds category on final day of the 2012 Australian Open Water Championships on Sunday, February 19.
The Australian Championship is of considerable importance as it precedes the forthcoming 2012 London Olympic Games, thus providing a chance to their national swimmers to warm up for the mega event.
Lovi remained untouchable throughout the 5km discipline. With her immaculate efforts, she crossed the finishing line with a timing of 1 hour, 03 minutes and 59.61 seconds for gold medal.
The champion maintained a lead of almost one minute over her following rival, Phoebe Dammersmith of Surrey Park. The 14-year-old Dammersmith completed her swim in a time of 1 hour, 05 minutes and 07.00 seconds for silver medal of the event.
She was trailed by Renee Holdstock of Logan Vikings, who also stayed nearly one minute behind her preceding swimmer and stepped on the medal rostrum for bronze medal by clocking a time of 1 hour, 06 minutes and 11.39 seconds.
In the meantime, Emily Seymour of Redcliffe League excelled in the 5km swim in Girls 15 Year Olds category. The 15-year-old Seymour astonished the open water crowd by seizing gold medal of the event with an effort of 1 hour, 02 minutes and 34.33 seconds.
With her impressive performance, she was followed by Jessica Bayliss of Australian Crawl, who stayed almost three minutes away from Seymour and completed her swim in a time of 1 hour, 05 minutes and 00.17 seconds for silver medal.
The third spot of the race was secured by Kaylie Ekinci of Campbelltown, who surfaced on the finishing end for third position by producing an effort of 1 hour, 05 minutes and 44.93 seconds
Surrey Park’s Lucy Smithson and Ekinci’s teammate, Sarah McNevin ended their swims with efforts of 1:06:09.55 and 1:06:10.41 hours for fourth and fifth position, respectively.
Lovi and Seymour were contented with their breath-taking efforts in the 5km discipline while they also expressed their desire of representing Australia at the biggest stage of sports.
