Zaurbek Baysangurov defends titles and grabs unanimous win over Michel Soro – Boxing news
Zaurbek Baysangurov, the current WBO and International Boxing Organization light middleweight champion, defended his title successfully in an epic bout by collecting an impressive unanimous decision over Michel Soro, the WBO European light middleweight champion,
in a 12-round bout held on May 12, 2012.
The ring for the bout was stretched at Ice Palace Terminal situated in Brovari, Ukraine and the event was promoted by Alexander Krassyuk of K2 Promotions Ukraine. The above duo headlined the Saturday night showdown whereas WBA World middleweight championship
clash between Gennady Golovkin and Makoto Fuchigami co-headlined the showdown.
Despite the fact that Baysangurov had a clear upper hand from the very beginning of the bout still Michel put forth a real good show so much so that Baysangurov was amazed by the young Soro’s impressive pugilism.
Zaurbek, 27, was entering in his career’s 28th bout and boasted 26 wins. He has lost just one bout in his whole career and has nailed a huge 20 men by sheer knockout. Since his last loss to Cornelius Bundrage, the Russian proud was on a seven-bout win streak.
Baysangurov grabbed his WBO title from Mike Miranda and this was his first title defence bout. The orthodox pugilist has also proudly held the WBA Inter-Continental light middleweight title, the EBU (European) light middleweight title, WBC International
light middleweight title, and IBF Youth light middleweight title as well.
With such an intimidating resume it was hypothecated that Zaurbek will annihilate Soro, who was entering in his career’s 19th bout, easily. The 22-year-old French was entering the ring with an undefeated streak. He has emerged victorious in 18 bouts and
nailed 11 of his opponents by sheer knockout.
This was the young Frenchman’s very first title bout and to some critics was considered as the toughest test of his career. Soro, during the bout did prove the crowd that he has the guts to give tough time to even the more experienced title holder men.
From the very first round, Soro used his footwork in an impressive manner and evaded the powerful knockout jabs of the defending champion. Zaurbek tried his level best but most of his attempts went in vain as Michel swiftly ducked and moved to and fro in
order to nullify his attempts.
Soro showed extreme signs of resilience, energy, agility and footwork so much so that anyone else in Zaurbek’s place would have easily been knocked out by the Frenchman. But it was the Russian’s experience that kept him going on and aided him in collecting
precious points.
The showdown ended and all the three designated judges awarded the bout to Zaurbek by 116-111, 117-111 and 115-112 scores. With this win, Zaurbek has collected his 27th win and unfortunately for Michel the career’s first ever title bout became his career’s
first ever loss.
