Zazu to make her return in the Marjorie Everett Stakes
Ann and Jerome Moss owned 4-year-old filly will make her comeback to the races in the Grade 2, $150,000 Marjorie Everett Handicap over Hollywood Park’s cushion track on 19 May, 2012, where she will face a massive field of 13 other 3-year-old and above fillies
and mares to run over a distance of 1 1/16 miles.
John W. Sadler trained Zazu at three was pulled out of racing at an agonizing time, just before the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic last fall at Churchill Downs.
As a three-year-old, Zazu at the backend of the 2011 season was in top form winning 2 out of three starts.
On 25 June, 2011, at Hollywood Park’s cushion track, Zazu was up against her old adversary, Plum Pretty in the Grade 2 Hollywood Oaks.
Going 1 1/16 miles under jockey Joel Rosario, Zazu was rampant out of the gate and set up a perfect trip in the stretch to kill it off, as she reeled in the pace setter and notched the Hollywood Oaks with the winning time of 1 minute and 43.36 seconds defeating
Plum Pretty in second and Love Theway Youare in third.
Already a Grade 1 winner, Zazu was sizing up another big race when she participated in the Grade 1 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes at Del Mar’s synthetic surface, but she finished a whisker adrift of Ultra Blend in second on 6 August, 2011, under a new jockey Garrett
Gomez.
Joel Rosario replaced Garrett Gomez in the Grade 1 Lady’s Secret Stakes at Santa Anita Park’s dirt course on 1 October, 2011.
The Kentucky bred Tapit filly defeated her Clement Hirsch rival, Ultra Blend in second as Great Hot finished third, while Zazu completed the 1 1/16 mile distance in 1 minute and 41.59 seconds.
Out of Mr. Greeley mare Rhumb Line, Zazu was all set to wreak havoc at Churchill Downs, but a shoulder injury surfaced dashing her hopes of winning the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic.
“It was a major disappointment,” trainer John Sadler said.
Formerly known as the Milady, the Marjorie Everett Stakes has reeled in the likes of Pachattack, Sugarinthemorning, and Ellafitz, which will make the race all the more exciting.
