Zdenek Stybar must make realistic choices says Wilfried Peeters
Wilfried Peeters, the supervisor of the previous Cyclo-cross World champion, Zdenek Stybar, observed that the cyclist has to finalise his options for the coming season.
The cyclist won the world event twice and this will be his third victory if he manages to put his head to it.
Stybar started his professional career with Team Telenet-Fidea and stayed with the team from 2005 to 2011. He accepted an offer from Quick Step in 2011 and will ride for the team in the 2012 season.
He won the under 23 category of Cyclo-cross National Championships and World Championships in 2005 and 2006.
Stybar dominated the Elite Czech Republic National Championships in 2008, 2010 and 2011 and secured the UCI Cyclo-Cross World Championships for two times consecutively, in 2010 and 2011.
The 26-year-old was unable to secure a significant number of wins to his credit. He finished the GVA Trofee race at the 14th position, almost 3 and a half minutes behind the race winner, Bart Wellens.
Stybar was disappointed with his performance, and expressed his feeling on the twitter page.
He wrote, “Shamed about my race today, before so many supporters. I'm sorry for them. I have no explanation about my results :(”.
A little boost to his confidence came at the World Cup Cyclo-cross race event at Namur where he finished 5th.
Peeters spoke about the cyclist, emphasising that Zdenek is trying too hard to achieve the results and putting too much pressure on himself.
He told Nieuwsblad, “That boy does everything with great enthusiasm and energy, but sometimes it's stronger than him. You have to constantly rein him in”.
He further added that he did not blame the cyclist for his unimpressive performance and also advised Stybar that he needs to change his strategy.
Peeters said, “He must gradually go a different way. No one is indestructible, huh. Draw the line somewhere”.
Wilfried stated that it is impossible for any athlete to participate and win all the events, Stybar should make clear plans and stick to them.
The recent win at Namur has really helped the cyclist as he is positive to secure some early wins in the coming season. It will be fascinating to witness how and where the World Champion decides to ride in the season ahead.
