Zelda producer believes fresh experience crucial to survival of franchise – Gaming news
The Legend of Zelda director Eiji Aonuma is convinced that Nintendo’s most prolific franchise Zelda faces a huge risk of dying unless it is allowed to grow into something more.
During an interview with Engadget, he explained that the Japan-based company is planning on trying out some new things with the Zelda franchise in order to make the experience on offer somewhat unique and consequently fresh.
Aonuma, however, admitted that the company is well aware of the huge fan base that Zelda already has and how deviating too much from the proven formula can lead to the risk of disappointing, angering and even losing these fans.
Despite the risk involved in tinkering with the franchise that is considered to be perfect by many, the Zelda producer said that it is imperative to let the game allow if it is to be kept alive.
“If we don't change we might die,” Aonuma said. “We need to evolve. Things need to change. Things need to grow.”
He went on to admit that they had actually begun to seriously consider revamping the series on the calls of fans themselves, who complained that the original concept and experience is beginning to get a bit stale.
“With regard to... breaking the mold or changing the formula, I certainly hear the thoughts of fans. The impressions of fans that maybe it's getting a bit stale,” Aonuma said.
The amount of change being demanded by the fans, however, is something that they are not quite sure of.
“If we change it too much, I'm also concerned people will say, 'OK, is it no longer Zelda if we don't have this formula?'”
Talking in reference to “The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD” that is slated for a fall 2013 release, Aonuma explained that the remake of the popular title is somewhat of a warm-up project to help the development team discover what the new Nintendo hardware
is capable on.
The knowledge gained from the experience would eventually be used to make a game that utilises the potential of Wii U to the maximum.
An original Zelda title for the Wii U is already in the works, though no release window has been revealed by Nintendo yet.
