Zenit KAZAN sweeps VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN – 2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League
The Zenit KAZAN men’s team from Russia played with the VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN on February 22.
The match between the two sides was played in the Russian city of Kazan where the quarter finals of the 2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League- Men are being staged.
It did not take long for the Russian’s to assert themselves over their opponents as KAZAN made a clean sweep over their opponents. Not only did the home side win the match in three back-to-back sets, they played each frame by smothering their rivals. As
a result, the scoreboard showed the following final set scores, 25-17, 25-21 and 25-18.
Nikolay Apalikov, who is a player on the winning side, shared his views regarding the win in the following manner, “As they were missing Oliver Venno, our opponents were sidelined in their offense but they still remain a very strong and dangerous rival.
We will have a tough return game next week and we are not going to relax after today’s victory.”
On the other hand, the coach of the VfB squad, Stelian Moculescu, expressed himself by giving the following comments at the press conference that was held after the match reached its close, “We really count on the return game at home. Today we made many
mistakes but still did not play too bad. We shall not let them impose their game next week.”
Despite the fact that they lost the match, it was an Israeli player who was able to earn the title of being the top scorer of the match. Marcus Böhme was successful in keeping the pressure on the Zenit squad by tallying a total of 18 points for his team.
On the other hand, the most active Russian player was Maxim Mikhaylov as he put up 16 points for the home team.
The semi finals of the CEV Volleyball Champions League are scheduled to take place on in March on 17 and 18. The final four round of the tournament is going to be staged in Poland where the city of Lodz will be acting as the host of the championship.
