Zenit KAZAN wins gold in 2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League – Volleyball news
The final match of the 2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League took place on March 18.
The title match of the tournament was being played in the Polish city of Lodz. The venue of the competition which was the Atlas Arena, was filled with a total of 13,000 spectators. The two teams that fought for the gold medal were PGE Skra BELCHATOW as well
as Zenit KAZAN.
The final match of the tournament had all the ingredients of a thrilling competition as both the teams were playing at their best and took the match to five long and gruelling sets.
However, it was the Zenit squad that was able to get their hands on the gold at the following final set scores: 25-15, 16-25, 22-25, 26-24 and 17-15.
The player that was able to earn the title of the best scorer of the match belonged to the Russian squad. Maxim Mikhailov of the Zenit KAZAN squad kept the pressure on his opponents by tallying the most points in the entire match.
On the other hand, the Most Valuable Player of the tournament was given to Mariusz Wlazly of the Polish team.
The first set of the match saw the Russians take the lead at the coming of the first technical time out at 8-3. However, Skra did not let their opponents move too far ahead and took the lead. Before long, the Russians were able to take dominance again and
went on to seal the deal at 25-15.
The home team was able to rally themselves together and step up their game as they asserted themselves in the second set of the match and took control. The Russians had a tough time as the Skra was able to smother the guests at 25-16.
After the second set, Skra was able to capitalise on the momentum generated and went on to make a win in set three as well. However, the Zenit squad took matters into their own hands afterwards and went on to bag the fourth as well as the fifth sets if the
game at 26-24 and 17-15 respectively that got them the gold.
