Zenit Kazan sweeps Paykan Tehran at Club World Championship – Volleyball news
The second day of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship concluded on October 9th in Doha, Qatar. One of the Pool A fixtures saw the Zenit Kazan of Russia compete against Paykan Tehran of Iran on Sunday. The match between the two sides
did not take long to end as Zenit Kazan was able to make a clean sweep over their Iranians counterparts.
Paykan Tehran gave the Russian club a pretty good challenge in the opening frame but Zenit Kazan was able to bag it in the end. The loss of the first set at such a close call left the Iranians a bit de-motivated and they lost the second set easily. However,
the Iranians were able to revitalise themselves in the third set but the effort came in too late and Zenit Kazan was able to seal the deal at the following final set scores: 26-24, 25-18 and 25-23.
Vladimir Alenko of Zenit Kazan expressed himself in the following manner at the press conference after his team had won the match: “I am happy for the result and the performance of some of my players. At some moments of the match, my players didn’t concentrate
due to the provocation of the Iranian players.”
On the other hand, the Paykan Tehran coach, Peyman Akbari, stated: “Today, we played much better than our previous match. Right after the last match I talked to the players and asked them to improve themselves and fight during the whole match, and they did.
We started our training sessions 10 days ago and it isn’t enough for any time to prepare itself for such a strong competition.”
Paykan Tehran was able to lead the first set at 7-1, an advantage they were able to extend to 14-6. However, Zenit Kazan put up an impressive display of volleyball and was able to close in the gap at 16-11. The Russian club did not give up the chase and
eventually made the frame reach a tie at 23-23. The competition remained tough but the Russians were able to bag the frame at 26-24.
The second set started off evenly but as it progressed, Zenit Kazan was able to emerge with a lead of 20-12, an advantage they were able to keep until the end at 25-18. The gain of the first two sets got the Russians going in the third set and they were
able to seal the deal on the frame at 25-23.
The player that was able to post the most points for Zenit Kazan was Maxim Mikhaylov who scored a total of 17 points for his team while the most points scored on the Paykan Tehran side were by Reza Safaei.
