Zenit Kazan wins bronze at FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship
The bronze medal match of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship took place on the October 14, as Zenit Kazan of Russia and Sesi Sao Paulo of Brazil took each head on. The contest between the two sides did not take long to reach its close os the
Russian club was able to hand out a defeat to the Brazilians at 3-1.
The first set of the match was won by the Brazilian club but the Russian rebounded in the second and levelled the match. The third set was competitive as both clubs wanted to gain dominance in the match but the Russians prevailed in bagging themselves a
win. The fourth set saw the Zenit Kazan come out strong and they were able to seal the deal on the match at the following final set scores: 19-25, 25-20, 25-23 and 25-23.
Vladimir Alekno, the coach of the winning club, made the following comments: “I'm not satisfied with the third position, but I'm happy with today's victory so we can take home the bronze medal. After all we have beaten one the biggest teams in the world.
My players played very well today and they were determined to win.”
On the other hand, the coach of the Sesi Sao Paulo club, Giovane Gavio, expressed himself at the press conference in the following manner: “We would like to congratulate the Russians with today's victory and the bronze medal. I would also like to congratulate
the organising committee with this wonderful championship. We gained a lot of experience this week and will benefit from it in the future.”
The lead went to Sesi Sao Paulo in the opening set at 3-1but the Zenit Kazan were able to close in the gap at 13-9. However, it did not stop Sesi Sao Paulo from taking the first set of the game at 25-19. The second set saw a bit of competition in the beginning
but Zenit Kazan was able to bag it eventually at 25-20. The third and the fourth sets were both competitive with the two clubs staying neck to neck with each other all the while but the frames swung in favour of Zenit Kazan at 25-23 each.
The Zenit Kazan club was able to outperform their rivals in blocking by pulling off 13 points in the entire match. On the other hand, Sesi Sao Paulo was only able to manage a total of five blocks. However, the Brazilian club was able to outdo Zenit Kazan
by performing six service aces while the Russians could only hit two of them.
Despite the fact that his club lost the match, a Sesi Sao Paulo player was able to register the most points in the entire match by scoring 23 of them. On the other hand, the top scorer in the Zenit Kazan club was Maxim Mikhaylov with a total of 20 points
of his own.
